MESJ Activities
Methanol Energy System Japan (MESJ) conducts activities that combine research, information dissemination, industry collaboration, and policy proposals toward the realization of a methanol-based carbon-neutral society.
MESJ goes beyond general awareness-raising. It takes an integrated approach to CO₂ capture, renewable energy, green hydrogen, methanol synthesis, fuel applications, power generation, and the chemical industry, and works with industry to explore implementable roadmaps for social deployment.
Monthly Seminars & Annual Symposium
MESJ organizes monthly seminars on the technologies, policies, industrial trends, and international developments required for building a methanol-based society. Based on the content of the book Blueprint for a Methanol Society, the seminars will systematically address topics such as CO₂ capture, renewable energy, methanol synthesis, fuel applications, power generation, use as a chemical feedstock, and international trends in e-methanol. In the future, MESJ plans to organize an annual symposium involving companies, government-related organizations, and research institutions, with the aim of deepening discussion and collaboration toward the realization of a methanol-based society.
2. Industry Collaboration and Joint Examination of Technical Challenges
Building a methanol supply chain requires collaboration across many technologies and industrial sectors, including CO₂ capture, renewable electricity, hydrogen production, methanol synthesis, storage and transportation, power generation, fuel use, and chemical production. Together with relevant companies and research institutions, MESJ will work to identify technical challenges, conduct information surveys, propose research and development themes, and create opportunities for joint discussion. In the future, MESJ aims to promote collaboration through an industry consortium, focusing not only on individual technologies but also on the entire supply chain.
3. Policy Proposals and Roadmap Development
Achieving carbon neutrality requires not only technological development, but also institutional design, infrastructure development, international cooperation, and industrial policy.
Based on scientific data, quantitative analysis, and surveys of international trends, MESJ will develop policy proposals and roadmaps for utilizing methanol as an energy carrier.
By comparing methanol with other options such as hydrogen, ammonia, batteries, and CCS, MESJ will present realistic and implementable strategies for carbon neutrality.
4. Publications, Videos, and Information Dissemination
MESJ disseminates the concept of a methanol-based society through books, articles, lecture videos, and short explanatory videos. For experts and companies, MESJ provides technical and quantitative information. For general audiences, MESJ aims to communicate climate change, energy issues, CO₂ utilization, and synthetic fuels in an accessible and understandable manner. General science education and outreach activities will also be developed in collaboration with international initiatives such as IUPAC, as well as through future publications for general readers.
5. International Collaboration
Methanol is becoming increasingly important not only for domestic use, but also as an international energy carrier, marine fuel, and chemical feedstock. MESJ will make use of international networks, including IUPAC, to strengthen collaboration with researchers, companies, and policy institutions overseas. MESJ aims to communicate the methanol-based society concept originating from Japan to the international community and to create a collaborative platform in which companies from Japan and abroad can participate.
